Your Imagery Work Break – 2023 French Open

We love maps.

We love imagery.

We love work breaks.

We hope you like them as well!

If you love playing or watching tennis, you’ll love the image we’re sharing with you this month. Start warming up now and practice that back swing.

For this month’s Imagery Work Break, we feature a 30-cm Pléiades Neo 4 image taken from high above looking down at the tennis courts of Roland Garros around 9:39 a.m. local time on May 31, 2023. At this time, the French Open, a Grand Slam tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts, was under way at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, from May 28 through June 11, 2023. Singles, doubles, mixed doubles, junior and wheelchair tournaments were played in this 122nd edition of the French Open. The athletic complex itself is named after Roland Garros, a pioneering French aviator, and was constructed in 1928 to host France’s first defense of the Davis Cup. The 34-acre complex contains 20 courts, including three large-capacity stadiums; Les Jardins de Roland Garros, a large restaurant and bar complex; Le Village, which includes  the press and VIP area; France’s National Training Centre; and the Tenniseum, a bilingual, multimedia museum of the history of tennis.

In this image we can see the second round of Men’s and Women’s single play underway, along with doubles matches too. The stands surrounding the tennis courts are packed with spectators. We can even detect the players on the court.

Of course, the event captured in this image wasn’t without controversy. Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified from the tournament after Kato accidentally hit a ball girl during their doubles match. The incident sparked controversy and criticism of Marie Bouzková and Sara Sorribes Tormo, who argued for the disqualification. Kato hit a one-handed backhand that unintentionally struck the ball girl, injuring her and prompting tears. Despite Kato’s immediate apology and the umpire’s warning, Bouzková and Sorribes Tormo insisted on the disqualification. After a consultation with officials, Kato and Sutjiadi were defaulted, leading to emotional scenes on the court.

Despite the drama, the details in this satellite image are quite impressive and it definitely captures our interest.

Have a great rest of your workday! 😊
