Historic D-Day unfolded on June 6, 1944, and altered the course of World War II. Along the coastline of Normandy, France, where the legendary D-Day beach landings took place, is where more than 4,000 American soldiers died.
The Normandy American Cemetery is where we can find the graves of nearly 9,400 soldiers in total who lost their lives during that war. Almost 1,600 names are etched on the walls in the nearby Garden of the Missing. The cemetery sits on a bluff high above the coast where three Medal of Honor recipients were laid to rest and 45 sets of brother were buried side by side.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2024 – a day now known as the greatest amphibious landing in history – former President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron led a ceremony that was attended by thousands, including WWII veterans. The event featured speeches about democracy, military flyovers, and emotional tributes. Macron awarded the Legion of Honor to 11 U.S. WWII veterans during the ceremony. The ceremony included a wreath-laying, a 21-gun salute, and the playing of Taps.
Every year, more than a million people visit the historic cemetery to pay their respects to the fallen. At the west end of the cemetery, granite statues represent the United States and France. A small chapel sits at the center of the cemetery. Inside, a ceiling mosaic depicts America blessing her sons as they depart to fight for freedom. In the open arc of the memorial, a bronze statue symbolizes the indomitable spirit of American youth. The 17-acre site of the cemetery was filled with people wanting to pay their respects and recognize those who gave their lives in an historic event.
For this month’s Imagery Work Break, we feature a 40-centimeter GeoEye-1 color enhanced photo from June 6, 2024. In the image, you can see the long red stretch of carpet laid down for the 80th anniversary at the cemetery. The ocean rolls up on the beach nearby, while the cemetery can be seen surrounded by lush vegetation.
Have a great rest of your workday! 😊
