Apollo News Snippets – July 2018

  • The May 2018 NOAA Global Climate report is out and the warming trend continues as you probably guessed. May 2018 was the 4th hottest May on record with all five of the warmest Mays occurring since 2014. This was the 401st consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th Century average as well as the warmest May on record over Europe and the contiguous United States. Oh and I am guessing you heard that Antarctica is melting faster than ever predicted – climate change is a hoax right Trump? Not!
The May 2018 NOAA temperature percentile departure map shows large pockets of record warmth across the United States and Europe and then cool spots over northern Canada and central Asia.M
  • July 3rd is a holiday you surely have never heard of, Eat Beans Day, and in celebration of this crucial holiday, our Google Search of the month was, “GIS and beans.” And well, you might not be surprised to find out that there were only a few results, though this one from Michigan State University shows the bean growing regions and production of Costa Rica. If you have a chance, check out their cool maps like this one!
  • Last month we reviewed the online GIS resources for Lexington, Kentucky and this month we move south to check out the online GIS datasets for Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the second largest city in the state. And as has been the trend of late, the landing page for their GIS resources is rather barren but they do offer all of the options one might expect from a city. At the top of the page, are several themed web maps, below that are links to downloadable GIS data as well as a simple property search. Overall, this is some solid work Baton Rouge!
