Apollo News Snippets – January 2019

• It’s tech time folks, woot woot! So here we go with it:

  Low-cost plasma generator could offer filter-free water purification for remote locations.
  An interesting way to extend the reach of solar energy when space is limited.
  File this one under, WHAT?, as this mushroom is a fusion of power-producing bacteria and nano-wires.
  What’s next – embroidered batteries? Yep!
  A nearly-perfect recycler of organic waste – purple bacteria.
  Star-Trek inspired airplane with no moving parts.
  From greenhouse gas to a part of flooring – closing the loop on sustainability.

The November 2018 temperature departure map shows pockets of cool weather across eastern North America – with pockets of record warmth over western Africa.

• The November 2018 NOAA Global Climate report is out and surprise, the warming continues unabated. This November was the fifth warmest November on record since 1880 and the 407^th month with a temperatures above the 20^th Century average. And all this on the background of a Trump administration that still wants to ignore facts.

• January 26^th is Australia Day and in celebration of their national holiday, my Google search of the month was, “Australia and GIS.” If you check out the huge number of results you might find this extremely detailed paper by McCuaig et al where they explore the uranium resources of the continent using GIS. You might have to connect to this page using Facebook to download the article, apologies if you do not have an account to do this!

• Last month we reviewed the GIS resources of Saint Paul, Minnesota and also unveiled our new GIS review format; and for this first review of 2019, we check out the second largest city in Mississippi, Gulfport.
