The September Pléiades 1 – Pléiades Neo Point of Interest – Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

In August, we looked at Whitehaven Beach, Australia found within the Whitsunday Islands National Park in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. This month for the Pléiades 1 – Pléiades Neo Point of Interest, we stop by Richmond, Virginia to check out Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.


These two satellite images show the botanical garden surrounded by a wooded area, lakes and assorted buildings. There also are neighborhoods flanking the botanical garden on two sides. In the first image from May 1, 2023, a Pléiades Neo 3 30-cm color photo, a flare can be seen shining brightly, a reflection of light bouncing off the metal roof of the botanical garden’s main building. The second photo captured June 6, 2022 by 50-cm Pléiades 1B is a muted replica of the first photo but with the one lake’s surface refracting light. About the Point of Interest: Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden was founded in 1984 as a community oriented, non-profit garden. The botanical garden features more than a dozen themed gardens, a conservatory, library and café. It offers seasonal exhibitions, art exhibitions, special events and seasonal evening hours with live music.

Fun Factoids: (1) Once the hunting ground of Powhatan Indians, the land where the botanical garden sits was owned by Virginia Governor Patrick Henry in 1786. The section of land where the garden is today was purchased in 1884 by Richmond businessman, Lewis Ginter. (2) Grace Arents, Ginter’s niece, bought the land from her uncle’s estate and willed the property to the city of Richmond with the stipulation that it be developed into a botanical garden honoring her uncle. (3) The botanical garden is comprised of 82 acres. (4) The Kroger Community Kitchen Garden at the botanical center grows fresh produce for area food banks. (5) In a typical year, the botanical garden welcomes more than 450,000 guests, including 17,000 schoolchildren and 14,000 member households. A team of approximately 70 staff members are joined by 700 volunteers to help operate the botanical garden. (6) Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden spans 82 acres and includes four lakes, 5,700 unique taxa of plants grown within 15 distinct outdoor gardens, 11 major buildings including a conservatory and greenhouse, plus an 80-acre branch site, the Lewis Ginter Nature Reserve.

The 50-cm Pléiades 1 High-Resolution Satellite Constellation

The Pléiades 1 constellation (or at least part of it!) has been in orbit since December 2011 and if you have not had a chance to check out any sample imagery, take a few moments and have a look at the gallery on our website. A variety of Pléiades 1 products are available from both a well-established archive and as a new collection, including 50-centimeter (cm) pansharpened imagery and 50-cm panchromatic – 2-meter (m) 4-band multispectral bundles. The 30-cm Pléiades Neo High-Resolution Satellite Constellation

Pléiades Neo is our newest high-resolution satellite constellation. The first Neo satellite went up in April 2021 and the second in August of the same year. This 30-centimeter resolution constellation will add two more satellites in the next few months and upgrade from daily to intraday revisits. Pléiades Neo has six multispectral bands with 1.2-meter resolution, including a deep blue and two infrared bands, along with a 30-centimeter resolution panchromatic band.
