Free For All! – GIS Datasets For Colorado

Welcome to the first editions of our regular feature, Free For All! In these short pieces, Katie and I will point our Geospatial Times readers to the favorite free item we found that month for those in GIS and remote sensing. We hope you enjoy these monthly pieces and please do let us know if you have a suggestion for an item to feature in future editions.

For my first Free For All!, I would like to pay homage to our home state with a link to a diverse collection of GIS data for Colorado. This site is run by our neighbors at Colorado State University (CSU) and features links to a variety of free shapefile and raster datasets, including:

  • Administrative and political boundaries
  • Environmentally sensitive areas
  • Federal lands
  • Geologic and hydrographic features
  • Transportation infrastructure and roads

Here is a direct link to this collection of GIS data for Colorado.

In the map above, I used several of the layers found in CSU’s collection of GIS data to show the proximity of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) owned oil and gas rights to environmentally sensitive areas.
