2.5-meter ALOS PRISM Stereo Imagery is Live in Image Hunter

As you might know, we have been adding more satellites to Image Hunter than ever over the past months and we have no plans to stop anytime soon! Image Hunter allows you to search for the right image for any need, whether you have a small budget and have never purchased imagery, need to image a massive area, or anything in between. So why not add even more satellites then?

With that in mind, we’re excited to announce the addition of ALOS PRISM data to Image Hunter! Built by Japan’s NASA equivalent, JAXA, the ALOS PRISM (or by its crazy-long full name, the Advanced Land Observing Satellite Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping) archive has complete land coverage of the entire globe, and all in 2.5-meter (m) panchromatic stereo! In fact, the vast majority of ALOS PRISM datasets are in tri-stereo, combining traditional forward and backward stereo with a nadir (or directly above) image.

Though no longer in operation, the archive’s unprecedented land coverage means that ALOS PRISM imagery is available in many areas, even cloudy ones, where no other stereo option can be found. Best of all, this often exclusive coverage doesn’t come with a huge price tag, as ALOS PRISM is one of our most affordable stereo datasets at $500 per scene.

Here are some of the key specifications of ALOS PRISM imagery:

  • Satellite Launch Date and Life Span: January 24, 2006 01:49 UTC (launched) – May 12, 2011 (last image)
  • Spectral Bands: panchromatic only
  • Sensor Resolution: 5-m at nadir; plus forward and backward stereo
  • Dynamic Range: 8-bit
  • Footprint Width: 35 km (at nadir) in triplet mode (forward, backward and nadir)
