NASA’s LandSat satellites have been providing the public with a free source of low resolution satellite imagery of the Earth for many years. The data can be downloaded from numerous sources using a variety of search tools. This is wonderful! Free data, readily available, what more can you ask for?
Well, if you have done a search for LandSat imagery (or for any free NASA data), then you will know why it’s not all peachy keen. Each search engine is just different enough to be confusing, they also seem to lack clear and understandable directions. The tools are not as intuitive as one would like. That’s what you get when you have a whole bunch of rocket scientists building search and discovery tools.
Luckily someone else noticed the issue and created a helpful tutorial that demonstrates how to use one of these search engines. Jarlath O’Neil-Dunne at the University of Vermont put the tutorial together and was thoughtful enough to include a section on how to load the imagery into ArcGIS. You can find his tutorial here.
